As more offices and companies are becoming less strict about their dress code, more team members are struggling to determine what office appropriate is. With so many options for workplace fashion, some team members make the correct choices while others fall short. In order to remain comfortable yet professional during casual Friday, here are some things to avoid when it comes to workplace fashion.

  • Excessive Skin/Cleavage– There is no question that showing excessive skin within the workplace is inappropriate, however there is still the ongoing argument of what constitutes “too much.” While some argue that too much skin showing with females is inappropriate, others will argue that it is the woman’s right to dress feminine and others shouldn’t be focused on the amount of skin shown. Our advice? Take cues from your boss and management on how to appropriately dress within the office.
  • Graphic Tees and Ripped Jeans– Even if your job allows this type of dress, it is never a good idea to wear this casual outfit to work. You never know when a graphic could be offensive to a coworker, and your casual appearance could negatively affect your reviews.
  • “Working Girl”– While this movie gave women of the 80s a starting to point for workplace fashion, it is important to remember it was from the 1980s. It is important to update your workplace fashion with the times to avoid seeming out of touch.
  • Piercings and Tattoos– Another sticky subject when it comes to workplace fashion, there is still an ongoing debate about piercings and tattoos within the workplace. While some companies do not mind the jewelry or skin art, others find them extremely unprofessional. Our advice? Consider taking out your facial piercings and covering your tattoos when you enter your interview. During that time, ask how the company feels about piercings and tattoos.
  • Unkempt Appearance– Having a sloppy appearance can make you seem uncaring about your job and unprofessional, which can harm you in the long run. Be sure to run a brush through your hair and avoid wearing clothing that doesn’t match or is wrinkled.

While appearance is not everything when it comes to the workplace, it is still important. Look for our second part to find out more workplace fashion mistakes to avoid.
